The announcement has sparked interest among fans of light-hearted fantasy and unconventional magic systems. The story follows Van, the overlooked fourth son of a powerful noble family, who astonishingly regains memories of a previous life as a Japanese office worker when he is just two years old. Though hailed as a genius in his early years, Van surprises everyone by awakening a non-combat magical ability known as “Production Magic” at the age of eight—an ability seen as practically useless in a family that values only offensive magic.
Consequently, Van is banished and relegated to govern a distant, insignificant village with only his faithful maid and his memories from his past life to keep him company. Unfazed, Van sets about changing the failing settlement with his so-called useless magic, determined not only to better the lives of the villagers but also to restore his own reputation.
First published on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō (Let’s Become a Novelist) website in May 2020, the series was subsequently acquired by Overlap Bunko, with the first print edition published in September 2021. As of January 2025, seven volumes have been published in the series, illustrated by Kururi.
A manga adaptation, illustrated by Maro Aoiro, began serialization on Overlap’s Comic Gardo website in August 2021. The manga has also reached its seventh volume, set for release in Japan on April 25. North American publisher Seven Seas has licensed the manga for English-language readers.
To celebrate the anime’s announcement, both Kururi and Aoiro released special illustrations on the official anime website and Comic Natalie.
