Anime fans are buzzing with speculation after a vague announcement hinted at a possible revival of a beloved but long-overlooked manga. Japanese distributor REMOW has revealed it is co-producing a new anime with Shueisha based on a property that ended more than 15 years ago. This announcement, published in Total Licensing’s Summer 2025 issue, has many pointing to Psyren as the likeliest candidate.

Originally created by Toshiaki Iwashiro, Psyren ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from late 2007 to 2010. Though it was never a top-tier hit during its serialization, its blend of action, sci-fi, and psychological mystery built a loyal fanbase. It’s also regularly listed among series fans most want to see adapted to anime—even ranking in the top 20 of a 2024 AnimeJapan poll.

What Makes Psyren Stand Out

Psyren follows Ageha Yoshina, a high school student drawn into a deadly alternate world after discovering a mysterious phone card labeled “Psyren.” In this world, monstrous beings called Taboo roam a desolate wasteland, and only those called Drifters can survive long enough to uncover its secrets. The series mixes elements of mystery thrillers, death games, and classic Shonen-style character growth. Its power system—comparable to Hunter x Hunter’s Nen—is complex and tightly woven into the story’s themes.

Despite early promise, Psyren concluded somewhat abruptly, a result many attribute to limited editorial support rather than poor quality. Still, the story wrapped with a complete arc, and fans have continued to champion its potential for animation.

Hope in the Era of Revivals

In recent years, older series like BLEACH have enjoyed successful animated revivals, sometimes even improving on the original endings. As the anime industry expands with more projects than ever before, the door opens for well-crafted, overlooked titles to finally get their due.

While nothing official confirms that Psyren is the subject of the upcoming project, its eligibility and enduring popularity keep it at the top of the speculation list. Even if it’s not Psyren this time, many fans are still urging others to check out the manga—a hidden gem that continues to inspire hope for a second life on screen.
