Kojima, who is also collaborating with A24 on a live-action film version of Death Stranding, shared his vision for adapting his game IPs. He distinguished his approach from direct plot retellings, like “The Last of Us” series, or fan-focused interpretations, such as “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” “As a film lover, I want to pursue expression as a film,” Kojima stated. “I am aiming to make ‘DEATH STRANDING’ in a way that can only be done as a film, and that will win awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. In fact, we are also currently working on an anime adaptation.”

The prospect of a Death Stranding anime was first mentioned by Kojima in October 2024. At that time, he outlined his strategy for expanding game IPs into other media formats like movies, anime, and TV dramas, referring to it as the “second phase” for his projects. Kojima aims to blur the lines between gaming and cinematic experiences, envisioning the Death Stranding IP flourishing across multiple platforms including anime, movies, VR, and game sequels.

This news comes as development continues on Death Stranding 2, which is scheduled for release on June 26, 2025, for the PlayStation 5.

The original Death Stranding game was developed by Kojima Productions and published by 505 Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is described as a genre-defying open-world action-adventure featuring Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, and Lindsay Wagner. The game’s narrative is set in a near future where mysterious explosions have triggered a series of supernatural events, the “Death Stranding,” pushing humanity towards extinction. Players take on the role of Sam Porter Bridges, tasked with traversing a ravaged wasteland to save humanity.
