Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment have announced the North American release of Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon, a special omnibus anime film set to hit select theaters in the United States and Canada. The event-style screenings will take place on April 13, 14, and 16, 2025, offering both an English dub and the original Japanese version with English subtitles.
The movie, which will first debut in Japan on March 28 for a three-week run, serves as a condensed recap of the anime’s first season while introducing an exclusive original episode titled Hoshina’s Day Off. Additionally, the film will feature a brand-new ending theme, Invincible, performed by Grammy-winning band OneRepublic.

Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon revisits the story of Kafka Hibino, a man who works in kaiju disposal but dreams of joining the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. His life takes an unexpected turn when he transforms into the powerful “Kaiju No. 8.” With help from his colleague Reno Ichikawa, Kafka must navigate the dangers of hiding his new identity while striving to pass the Defense Force exam. The film will also include a mysterious new kaiju attack that forces Kafka into a critical decision.
The special episode Hoshina’s Day Off follows Reno Ichikawa, who, after relentless training, finds himself unsure of how to spend his rare free time. When he notices Defense Force officer Soshiro Hoshina engaged in an unusual activity, he teams up with Iharu Furuhashi to secretly follow him only for the situation to take an unexpected turn.
Anticipation Builds for the Film and Upcoming Season
The film will premiere in 32 theaters across Japan before making its way to North America. Crunchyroll confirmed the limited theatrical release for the U.S. and Canada, but it has yet to announce ticket availability. Meanwhile, Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 will premiere in July 2025, continuing the story after the first season.

Fans worldwide eagerly await further announcements about additional international screenings. The anime, adapted from Naoya Matsumoto’s ongoing manga serialized in Shonen Jump+, has gained a strong following since its debut, with its first season airing in April 2024.
