A new official website and X account have announced that the anime film based on the fantasy mystery manga Whoever Steals This Book, by Nowaki Fukamidori and Kakeru Sora, will hit Japanese theaters sometime next year. Along with the news, a teaser trailer and a key visual were released that raised the excitement among the fans, and details about the main production staff were also shared.

Meet Mifuyu, a high school girl on a mission to recover stolen books that cursed her town. The promo showcases Mifuyu with an enigmatic girl named Mashiro, which indicates that they are journeying through story worlds to ultimately reverse chaos.

In one of the shots, Mifuyu and Mashiro are leaping into a glowing book, which illustrates their entry into each of the story worlds that were affected by the curse.

Story Overview of WSTB

Whoever Steals This Book is about Mifuyu, a teenager in a family of book collectors who doesn’t like books. Mifuyu’s great-grandfather created Mikura Hall, a library with many thousands of long-lost, rare, and collectible books. Once a few books went missing, this triggered a curse where the town changed, based on the stories in these books.

Now, it is up to Mifuyu to find the missing books, with the help of Mashiro, through the domains of these stories, so they can return the books and restore normalcy.

The book was first published by Kadokawa Shoten in October 2020, while the paperback appeared in June 2023. A manga adaptation, illustrated by Kakeru Sora, was serialized from December 2021 to March 2023 and was last compiled into three volumes.
