The popular figure skating anime Yuri on Ice is returning to streaming platforms. The full first season will be streamed on Hulu beginning June 3, 2025. The debut, classified as a Crunchyroll sublicense, comes with subbed and dubbed options in English.
Initially released in October of 2016, Yuri on Ice gained massive popularity in short order. The fascinating mix of poignant storytelling and choreographed figure skating sequences became a hit for studio MAPPA. The series gained a robust international following that is still loyal almost ten years down the line.
YURI ON ICE: Film Sequel Canceled Following Months of Delays
Although successful, the intended sequel movie Ice Adolescence continued to encounter setbacks. Announced in 2017, the film battled years of production setbacks. In April 2024, it was officially terminated. Studio MAPPA attributed “various circumstances” to its cancellation but provided no details.
Creative Team Behind Yuri On Ice
Yuri on Ice was directed by Sayo Yamamoto, who also directed the series and co-wrote the original story with Mitsuro Kubo. Kubo managed character designs and storyboarding. Character animation was led by Tadashi Hiramatsu, and figure skating choreography was done by Kenji Miyamoto. The music was carried out by Taro Umebayashi and Taku Matsushiba. MAPPA produced the anime, with Jun Shishido supervising episodes and Yoji Shimizu managing sound direction.
A Tale of Second Chances and Skating Fame
The series tracks Yuri Katsuki, a professional figure skater struggling with self-doubt following a devastating loss. Come back home to Kyushu, he doubts his future as a skater. His life is transformed when Victor Nikiforov, a legendary five-time world champion, shows up and offers to train him. With upstart Russian talent Yuri Plisetsky, they gear up for a competitive season that holds the promise of personal transformation and international fame.
