In Dan Da Dan Episode 18, a fictional band performs a song that instantly caught fans’ attention. What seemed like a simple anime performance quickly turned into a hot topic when viewers noticed it sounded very similar to X JAPAN’s famous hit “Kurenai.” The resemblance soon reached Yoshiki, the iconic drummer and songwriter of the band.

His reaction, shared online, surprised many and has since sparked a lively discussion among both anime and music fans.

Dan Da Dan Episode 18 Song Sounds Like X JAPAN’s “Kurenai”

In Dan Da Dan Season 2, Episode 18 (Episode 6 of that season), a fictional band called HAYASii plays a song named “Hunting Soul.” The band members’ names, Toshiro, Yoshikichi, Hideji, and Patarson, clearly nod to real-life X JAPAN members Toshi, Yoshiki, Hide, and Pata.

When Yoshiki, X JAPAN’s famous drummer and songwriter, saw it, he first reacted with surprise and a bit of humor on X (formerly Twitter), saying things like, “Doesn’t that sound like X JAPAN? I don’t know anything about this. Is this okay?” His tone changed later when he revealed that his lawyers had contacted him.

They warned it might be a copyright issue, which made him wonder if the anime had actually received permission to use something so similar. The connection was not accidental. Guitarist Marty Friedman, along with arranger Seiichi Nagai, confirmed that the anime’s song was inspired by X JAPAN’s “Kurenai.”

Yoshiki also pointed out that Sony Music Publishing owns the rights to “Kurenai,” and since Dan Da Dan is co-produced by Aniplex, a Sony company, the situation could be more complicated than it seems. Despite the legal concerns, Yoshiki’s attitude later became warmer.

He even said he might watch Dan Da Dan himself and is considering inviting someone from the anime’s production team onto his YouTube channel to talk about it. This suggests that the situation could end in a friendly way rather than turning into a serious dispute.
