Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle (Part 1: Akaza Returns) is still the top movie in Japan, staying at number one even in its second weekend. People are still rushing to the cinemas to watch it, even after a huge opening.

The movie’s popularity hasn’t dropped at all, and it’s quickly becoming one of the biggest anime films of the year.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Dominates Japan Box Office

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle had a massive start when it released on July 18, 2025. On the first day alone, it earned around ¥1.64 billion, breaking the previous opening day record held by Mugen Train. By Sunday, its earnings reached about ¥2.0 to ¥2.2 billion, which became the biggest single-day box office in Japan’s history.

In just three days, the film collected nearly ¥5.5 to ¥5.9 billion, beating the franchise’s records. Thanks to Marine Day, a national holiday in Japan, the film continued strong, earning about ¥7.31 billion (roughly $49.6 million) in just four days and selling over 5.16 million tickets.

It also set five major box office records, including the highest opening day and IMAX earnings. The IMAX version alone made $3 million on the first day and reached $3.5 million in four days, a first-time achievement in Japan. In its second weekend, the movie still held the number one spot, with fans continuing to support it.

Creators Focus on Story Over Records

While exact numbers for the second weekend aren’t confirmed yet, the film’s success is clear. Viewers praised the movie’s stunning animation by Ufotable and its emotional storytelling.

Co-director Yuichi Terao shared that even though the movie made about ¥12 billion in just ten days (nearly $87 million), the creators are more focused on telling a meaningful story than just chasing records.

Looking ahead, experts believe Infinity Castle might even beat the record set by Mugen Train, which earned over ¥40 billion (around $500 million) in total. The movie will also be released worldwide, including in North America and India, on September 12, 2025, so we’ll soon find out how it performs globally.
