In an unfortunate turn for anime fans and creators, the entirety of Grand Blue Season 2 has reportedly leaked online, just days after its initial official premiere. While only the first episode was officially released, all 12 episodes have appeared on various unauthorized torrent platforms. The leaked content appears to be the finalized version, complete with full animation and audio, though the origin of this significant breach remains unknown. One circulating torrent description included a link to a Japanese streaming site, happydouga.jp, but its connection to the leak has not been verified.

This incident is not an isolated one within the anime industry. August 2024 saw several anticipated Netflix titles, including DAN DA DAN, MAPPA’s Ranma ½ remake, and the Mononoke: Karakasa movie, compromised before their official releases. Netflix later confirmed those leaks stemmed from one of their production partners and took aggressive action. Similarly, Crunchyroll’s Spring 2024 lineup, featuring KonoSuba Season 3 and Sound! Euphonium Season 3, also faced leaks following early screenings at the Puerto Rico Comic Con. The specifics of the Grand Blue leak are still unclear, but its scale and timing highlight a growing problem of pre-release security vulnerabilities across the anime landscape.

Such widespread leaks are only intensifying the efforts of Japanese rightsholders to protect their intellectual property. Discussions are currently underway in the United States regarding anti-piracy legislation, such as the Foreign Anti-Digital Piracy Act, which aims to expedite the blocking of American residents from accessing foreign piracy sites. Kodansha, a member of Grand Blue’s production committee and the original manga publisher, was part of a 2022 lawsuit against Cloudflare, alleging facilitation of pirated material access. The Japanese government is also stepping up, allocating $2 million last year to develop an AI-powered piracy detection system.

Major anime companies like Toho and Aniplex, while not part of Grand Blue’s production committee, have previously utilized fingerprinting techniques, including watermarks and false credits, to identify leak sources. These methods led to subpoena requests in August 2024. More recently, Toho requested a court order for X (formerly Twitter) to reveal identifying information of alleged leakers of The Apothecary Diaries and My Hero Academia anime.

Fans are strongly encouraged to support Grand Blue Season 2 through legitimate streaming platforms as its official weekly run continues. Unauthorized leaks not only violate distribution rights but also directly undermine the diligent work of the creators and studios involved.
